Decorating with Pumpkins

By Designed 2B Sweet Inc. 3 years ago 1903 Views No comments

Pumpkin DisplayWith fall right around the corner, it's time for us to put away those summer decorations and welcome autumn with some fun fall decor. Of course, some of the most cost effective and fun decorations for the season are pumpkins. Slowly, stores are getting their stocks of pumpkins, but many orchards are already selling pumpkins of different varieties and sizes, making it the perfect time to get some pumpkins and make decorating the front of your house with pumpkins a fun weekend project!

Decorating with Pumpkins: Display

One of the easiest ways to give your house an autumn touch is with an autumn display. For most people, this includes having pumpkins of various sizes displayed in front of your home, possibly along with hay stacks or a simple scarecrow. The trick with this is making sure you have a display appropriately sized for your home. If you live in an apartment, one large pumpkin accompanied by smaller, hand size pumpkins is perfect. You can even mix some other gourds in to add color and give the front of your house a cute look. Depending on how early you start you might even reuse the pumpkins later for Halloween pumpkin carving or for making pumpkin pie!

Kids with pumpkinsDecorating with Pumpkins: Carving

With Halloween being next month, many kids are already looking forward to pumpkin carving. While you can use a normal kitchen knife for carving, we highly recommend getting a pumpkin carving kit if the kids are helping. These kits are usually a bit safer and give you everything you need for creating the perfect pumpkin. Before starting to carve your pumpkin, however, make sure you draw guide lines, since once the pumpkin is cut, that is how your pumpkin is going to look. We personally also like to highlight our carved pumpkins with paint to give a creepy or cute look to our own fall pumpkins.

Painted Pumpkins

Decorating with Pumpkins: Painting

If you have small children and want them to be more hands-on with your outdoor display, you may want to consider painting rather carving your pumpkins. While it can take a bit more work at times, it can not only be fun, but a chance for each of your children to show their creativity. It isn't uncommon to see pumpkins painted to look like cartoon characters, or with silly faces during Halloween. For small children, allow them to show their creativity with safe and fun paints. One of the cutest ideas we saw last year was a family that decorated a pumpkin in finger paint, with each of the kids having a hand print on the larger pumpkins, giving it a cute family vibe. When looking for paints, make sure to find things that won't easily wash off the pumpkin, or get a special paint to help set the paint on the pumpkin. We highly recommend permanent makers as well, and most traditional art paints. Just make sure to get them in a tube since you are likely to use a lot more paint than you think! With the right amount of preparation, though, it is easy to create adorable pumpkins that you will be happy to display outdoors!

child gardening with motherLooking for a way to make your child's first garden even more fun? For many kids, nothing is more fun than doing outdoor activities with mom and dad. As children get a bit older, many of them want to have their own little garden, especially if they have been seeing their parents grow things outdoors as well. While gardening with kids used to be challenging in the past, it is now much more fun and easy to create a fun garden for kids, especially with the right amount of planning and tools!

First Garden: Why Have a Garden

While creating a  garden may be a lot of work, it comes with a lot of benefits for children and parents alike. For one, it is great at teaching kids responsibility and where the food on their plates doesn't just come from the grocery stores. By growing their own food or flowers, they watch a life that is dependent on them. They learn that that they have to water it, baby it, and what happens at the end of the season after harvest when many plants die or hibernate. It truly is a great learning experience for children. Best of all, it doesn't take much room at all, allowing parents and children to enjoy gardening together, even if they don't have a lot of room outdoors.

When it becomes time to start putting together your first garden, it is important that you take into account what supplies you need and how much room you have available for a garden. Many people assume that you must have a big area for garden, but it really can be done just about anywhere, including a small second story deck on an apartment. All you need are some basic gardening supplies (child safe ones are available in most stores), seeds, dirt, and whatever decorations you want to include with your plants. As well, make sure to have a child sized bucket or watering can that children are able to use to water their plants.

First Garden: Crafts

To make the most out of your garden, consider allowing kids to make their own unique flower pots. You can purchase flower pot craft kits and paints at many stores that are specially designed for painting on plastic or ceramic. By letting kids make their own unique pots with craft supplies they are able to make their first garden more personal. These pots can in many cases also be used year after year, allowing kids to enjoy their unique projects for many years to come. If you have a large area, you may also want help kids make their own birdhouses and labels for their plants, helping them make their gardening experience even better!

With Winter Being Here

By 3 years ago 2276 Views 1 comment

With winter being here, many of us are bundling up and trying to keep ourselves warm as we deal with the frigid temperatures outside. For kids, being stuck indoors and unable to play outside is even worse, leaving parents frustrated. While it may be okay to put them in front of the TV or video game systems for a time, it is important to get kids interacting with others and having fun doing other, more creative projects. Rather than go with the same boring things this winter, consider taking a day and having a fun winter kids party with all of your children's friends!

Winter Kids Party: Crafts

Since it's too cold to play outside, consider having some fun, winter-themed crafts available for children at your party.  This is the best time of year for doing fun projects that may be a bit time consuming but allow children to learn something new and fun. One craft that many children, especially little girls,  love doing during the winter is learning how to make jewelry. You can find jewelry kits with a winter theme that are very simple, and some that are more complex, including beautiful beads with winter themed charms and colored beads. Sometimes they can be a bit difficult to find, so don't forget to check Christmas sections at party stores. After Christmas, you can often find snowflake and snowman kits discounted, allowing you to make adorable craft projects without the high prices!

Winter Kids Party: Treats

Another activity that is quite a bit of fun for children is making fun treats in the kitchen with mom or dad. It becomes even more fun when you have lots of little girls working together to make cupcakes, cookies, and other fun treats! To avoid a disaster, however, make sure you have everything together before little ones start working in the kitchen. If you are having lots of children, you may want to consider purchasing cookie or cupcake kits with a winter theme. These kits come with everything you need for decorating that dessert. Cookies are always a favorite since parents can make the dough ahead of time, allowing kids to make their own cookies with winter themed cookie cutters and then decorate them with sprinkles, colored sugar, and food grade paints.

If you want to be a little more creative, you may also want to consider making your own winter themed cupcakes. You can purchase snowflake or snowman themed cupcake cups, cupcake skirts, and even cupcake picks! Girls will have fun decorating their favorite cupcakes, giving them a fun winter theme! Best of all, they can share their creations when they are finished, allowing everyone to later relax and enjoy the yummy treats!

Looking for a fun weekend craft project do with the kids? For many kids, nothing is more fun than sitting down with mom and doing a fun craft project, especially if it is something they can wear when they are finished. Probably one of the most fun projects for a mother-daughter team is making their own girly t-shirts. This inexpensive craft project can be as simple or complicated as parents want, allowing children to try create a piece of wearable artwork on their very own t-shirt. Before starting, you just need to get your supplies together ahead of time to make sure that once you start your fun t-shirt project, you won't be interrupted!

Make Your Own T-Shirt: Supplies

While making a girly t-shirt with the kids can be a very fun projects, they do take a bit of planning. It is more than just going to your local craft store or party site. Before starting, you should have a plan and make a list of the supplies you need. Having a list together also allows you to shop for the best prices on supplies. You will find that while you may have to wait, many party sites online are cheaper than the craft stores, allowing you to get more supplies for the money. Of course, the cost of supplies will completely depend on the type of t-shirt you are planning on making and how much attention you want to put on each t-shirt. A t-shirt personalized by coloring a decal usually won't take as much time as something uniquely detailed, like a tie-dyed shirt with gemstones and shaped rhinestones.

Make Your Own T-Shirt: Fabric Paint & Markers

When many of us think of making our own t-shirts, our thoughts immediately go to tie-dying dyes,  iron-on decals and rhinestones. These paints allow girls to add their own unique touches to t-shirts. With these tools, girls can color in decals, as well as draw their own pictures on shirts. Some girls even love writing their own inspiring messages on t-shirts, one more way to make their t-shirts truly unique. Many of the same craft supplies you use to make your own t-shirts can be used on bags as well, allowing girls to carry their books and other toys in personalized style. When looking at these bags, make sure to go with something that is washable, since these bags are likely going to need washing if they go to schools and other places. Either way, girls will love being able to show off their fun t-shirt and bags they made with Mommy.

How To Make A Fall Leaf Craft Necklace

By Designed 2B Sweet Inc. 4 years ago 1948 Views 1 comment

It's hard to believe that autumn is already here, meaning that before long, we will be raking up colorful leaves. While many adults may not love raking leaves, it is a very fun time for children since this is the time of year where they can jump into leaf piles, and start collecting leaves to make their own colorful fall themed crafts. For parents, this can be a fun time as well since it means you can sit down as a family to make adorable crafts with everyday craft supplies, often ones that you can find in your own home!

Fall Leaf Craft Necklace: What is it

One of the cutest projects you can do with small and older children is making your own lead jewelry. This simple and cute project is not only easy to make for smaller children, but fun for parents. With the right preparations, you can even preserve the necklace to make it last for some time. Best of all, this craft can be done by multiple children at once, making it a perfect craft for autumn parties or even Halloween parties! All you need is some simple supplies and you are ready to make cute little necklaces!

Fall Leaf Craft Necklace: Supplies

Like many children's craft projects, this craft project doesn't require a lot of expensive ingredients. If you aren't planning on preserving the leaves, however, you can save money by not purchasing wax or glycerin. While you obviously don't have to do these steps, we highly recommend it since it means that the necklace can be worn throughout the fall, or stored away by parents as a special childhood memory.

  • Colorful Leaves
  • Liquid Glycerin
  • Water
  • Flat Pan
  • Surfactant (sold at hardware or garden stores)
  • Glitter
  • Large Craft Needle
  • Upholstery Thread
  • Disposable Bowls

Fall Leaf Craft Necklace: Directions

    • Make sure to do steps 2 through 5 two to six days before you plan on doing this craft!
    • 1. First, find colorful, smaller sized leaves. Find leaves that are a variety of different shades, including reds and oranges. If you cannot find smaller leaves, cut a larger leaf into fun shapes.
    • 2. Mix the glycerin and water together in a disposable pan or bowl. The combination needs to be one part glycerin, two parts water.
    • 3. Place 3 to 4 drops of surfactant in the glycerin mixture.
    • 4. Place the leaves in the glycerin mixture where they are submerged but with the stems sticking out. They will need to stay submerged for 2 to 6 days. The longer they stay, the better.
    • 5. Remove leaves from the mixture and dry with a paper towel. Leaves should be soft and pliable.
    • 6. Give children the leaves they will need to make an appropriately sized necklace. This can be anywhere from 8 to 15 leaves, depending on how full children want their necklaces.
    • 7. Have children with a need and thread start putting together their leaf necklace. Between each leaf, make sure to put a good size knot in the thread.

Tie a knot at the end of the necklace and wear!

Fall Hostess Gifts

By Designed 2B Sweet Inc. 5 years ago 2076 Views No comments

Looking for the perfect fall hostess gifts? With many of us traveling for the holidays, we sometimes forget with all the craziness to properly show our gratitude to our host and hostess. Since they are nice enough to invite us to their event and into their home, the least we can do is offer them a nice fall-themed hostess gift. While this may be an old tradition, it is still alive and welcomed by those who hold special gatherings, making it important that you think ahead about finding the perfect gift for your host or hostess!

Hostess Gifts: Why Bring One

Even though many of us don't expect to receive a hostess gift when we set up an event or party, it is considered good etiquette to purchase a small gift for your host or hostess. Usually a hostess gift is something small, valued anywhere from $5 to $30 as a way to say thank you for inviting you. If you are staying for multiple days, however, it is recommended that you purchase something that is a bit more expensive since you are inconveniencing your guest by staying in their home for days at a time. Traditionally, most guests bring something small, like a box of chocolate or a bottle of wine. As a rule of thumb, try staying away from impersonal gifts like gift certificates.

As well, remember that whatever you purchase is likely to only get a thank you or small recognition at the event. It is also unlikely to be used that day, since most guests choose specific decorations, foods, and wine pairings especially for a party. After the party, however, you should expect to receive a thank you note from the host. Also, don't forget to send a thank you note yourself, thanking them for the party.

Unique Fall Hostess Gifts

While you can give traditional hostess gifts at your fall event, we highly recommend giving your host or hostess something more memorable than food. Since everyone loves unique decorations for the holidays, give them something fun like decorative statues or figures as a fall hostess gift. Hatz especially has a full line of fall themed figures that are cute, funny, and perfect for displaying throughout the fall holidays. If you are going to a nice Halloween dinner or party, consider going with Halloween figures such as scarecrows, pumpkins, witches, and ghosts. For Thanksgiving, go with something cute like pilgrims, turkeys, and Native Americans. Most hostesses will love getting these adorable statues since they are unlikely to purchase something like this for themselves and will be happy to display it during the fall holiday season.

Holiday Fall Hostess Gifts: Wrapping

When purchasing your fall hostess gift, remember too that presentation is just as important as the gift. Consider going with a fall colored bag or gift box, especially in colors like reds, oranges, and browns. With the right colors of tissue paper and ribbons, it is easy to make a beautiful bag that is guaranteed to get some attention not only from your hostess, but from the other guests at the party too!
